Why not plan a trip to Fort Lauderdale where you to enjoy your favorite types of cultural offerings? Throughout the year, there are innumerable concerts, Broadway theater shows, art exhibits, opera and more. Many centered in the famous Riverwalk section of Fort Lauderdale.

The Florida Grand Opera performs at the Broward County Center for Performing Arts and presents first class opera. Their 2002-2003 seasons include Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci (performed together), Salome, The Pretended Garden Girl, The Marriage of Figaro and La Boheme. If you visit any time near the end of October through the middle of November, you can enjoy the world famous Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. This yearly event attracts top film talents and screens over a hundred films each year. Throughout the year, visitors can enjoy international independent films at the festival's permanent arthouse, Cinema Paradiso located in Riverwalk.

The Florida Philharmonic also appears at the Center for Performing Arts. Their 2002-2003 season includes Holst's The Planets; The Majestic Cello with works by Haydn, Strauss, and Franck; Festividad Latina with jazz flautist Nestor Torres; pianist Hector Gutierrez performing works by Berlioz, Rachmaninov and Beethoven; Handel's Messiah; Mahler's Fourth Symphony and many, many more. The Fort Lauderdale Children's Theatre presents productions such as Something's Afoot, Honk! The Musical, and Jack and the Magic Beans. This repertory company's productions are all performed by young people with actors, backstage crew, and technicians aging from six to 18.

The FLCT also sponsors acting classes and camps for young people interested in theater. The Gold Coast Jazz Society is a nonprofit organization that sponsors performances in the Amaturo Theater of the Center for Performing Arts. Performers have included flautist Nestor Torres, the Noel Friedline Quintet featuring Renee Dickerson, Allan Harris performing a tribute to Billy Strayhorn, Allen & Warren Vache, Nancy Marano, Chris LaBarbera presenting a birthday tribute to Louis Armstrong, Nneena Freelon and Dan McMillon and the Groovin' High Orchestra. Symphony of the Americas is another regular attraction at the Broward County Center for Performing Arts. The orchestra is affiliated with the Kennedy Center of Performing Arts and has regularly performs abroad. For its 2002 season, it featured guest performers Juana Zayas, Dan-Wen Wei, Christian Leotta and Wolfgang Sengstschmidt all accomplished pianists, as well as harpist Gwyneth Wentink.
